It happens in every household: you need to cook dinner, answer an urgent work call, or just take a five-minute break. Handing your toddler a smartphone is the easiest solution, but as we know, early screen time disrupts focus and brain development.
At Little Lord’s Preschool, we keep children happily engaged for hours without a single screen. How do we do it? By tapping into a toddler’s natural desire to touch, sort, and explore. In fact, the activities below are the exact same Montessori and sensory exercises our educators practice daily with children inside our Rajkot playhouses!
Here are five incredibly easy, zero-cost, screen-free activities you can set up at home right now to build your child’s cognitive skills the “Little Lord’s way.”
1. The Kitchen Sensory Bin (Pouring & Scooping)
Toddlers are fascinated by transferring objects. Give your child two unbreakable bowls, a spoon, and a handful of dry rajma (kidney beans) or raw pasta. Show them how to scoop the beans from one bowl to the other.
Why we do this in our playhouses: This simple task requires immense concentration for a two-year-old. It builds fine motor coordination, hand-eye balance, and satisfies their sensory curiosity.
2. The Masking Tape Animal Rescue
Take a few of your child’s favorite plastic toys or animal figures and tape them to a baking tray or the floor using standard painter’s tape. Tell your toddler the animals are “stuck” and ask them to peel the tape off to rescue them.
Why we do this in our playhouses: Peeling tape requires the “pincer grasp” (using the thumb and index finger). This is the exact muscle group your child will eventually use to hold a crayon and write!

3. Water and Sponge Transfer
Lay down a towel and provide two small bowls—one filled with water and one empty. Give your toddler a clean kitchen sponge. Show them how to dip the sponge into the water, move it to the empty bowl, and squeeze it out.
Why we do this in our playhouses: Squeezing a sponge builds hand and forearm strength. It is a highly soothing, repetitive activity that our teachers use to keep active toddlers calm and focused.
4. Everyday Object Color Sorting
Grab a muffin tin or draw three large circles on a piece of paper, coloring each one differently (e.g., Red, Blue, Green). Ask your toddler to hunt around the room for safe objects and sort them into the matching color category.
Why we do this in our playhouses: Before children can understand complex math, they need to understand categorization. Color sorting builds foundational logical reasoning and visual discrimination skills.
5. The Empty Cardboard Box Fort
Never throw away a large delivery box! Hand your toddler a box and a few crayons, and let them decorate the inside. Turn it sideways to make a cave, or leave it upright to be a spaceship.
Why we do this in our playhouses: Unstructured play is the highest form of learning. A simple box has no rules and no buttons, forcing your child to use 100% of their imagination and lateral thinking.

Bring the Joy of Screen-Free Play to School
While these activities are great for home, doing them in a structured, social environment takes learning to the next level. At Little Lord’s Preschool, these tactile, brain-boosting activities are the core of our daily curriculum. With our strict 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio, we ensure every child receives the guidance they need to explore, build, and grow safely.
